Every Exercise Has a Cognitive Load

Most dance teachers are already very skilled at thinking about physical load.

We ask questions like:

  • Is this exercise strong enough?

  • Too difficult?

  • Too repetitive?

  • Too advanced?

  • Too fatiguing?

But there’s another layer that often gets overlooked:

Every exercise also has a cognitive load.

In other words:
what does the brain have to do during the exercise?

A dancer standing at the barre doing slow tendus with full attention is having a very different neurological experience than a dancer:

  • trying to learn choreography quickly

  • tracking spacing

  • adjusting to music

  • remembering counts

  • spotting

  • responding to corrections

  • and managing performance anxiety at the same time.

The movement may look similar from the outside.

But the brain demand is completely different.

This matters because movement quality often changes when cognitive load increases.

You’ve probably seen this happen:
A dancer can perform something beautifully in isolation… until complexity is added.

The balance disappears.
The alignment changes.
The timing falls apart.
The tension rises.

Teachers often assume:
“They just need more repetitions.”

But sometimes the issue is not strength or flexibility at all.

Sometimes the nervous system simply becomes overloaded.

This is one reason dancers can:

  • nail a pirouette during drills

  • then suddenly lose it during choreography

Or perform an exercise well slowly…
but struggle once music, timing, direction, and attention demands increase.

The brain is constantly prioritizing.

When the environment becomes more complex, the nervous system may temporarily sacrifice:

  • precision

  • balance

  • mobility

  • coordination

  • or fluidity

in order to simply keep up.

That is not failure.
That is adaptation.

As teachers, this gives us another lens through which to observe movement.

Instead of only asking:

“Can they do the movement?”

we might also ask:

“Under what level of cognitive demand can they still organize the movement well?”

That is a very different question.

And it can completely change how we approach:

  • progressions

  • corrections

  • choreography

  • turns

  • across-the-floor work

  • and even warm-ups.

Sometimes the best progression is not adding more difficulty physically.

Sometimes it is improving the dancer’s ability to stay organized while the environment becomes more complex.

That is a trainable skill.

And understanding that may help us become both more effective—and more compassionate—teachers.

A simple plié is actually a wonderful example of cognitive load because most dancers think of plié as “basic.”

But the nervous system may be managing:

  • balance

  • foot pressure

  • timing

  • visual orientation

  • spinal organization

  • breath

  • joint position

  • and attentional control

all at the same time.

Let's use the plié as an example of how you might gradually increase cognitive complexity while trying to maintain movement quality.

Stage 1 — Basic Plié
Simple plié with attention on:

  • even foot pressure

  • smooth lowering and rising

  • easy breathing

  • relaxed shoulders and jaw

This is your baseline.

The question is:
Can the dancer organize the movement when the environment is simple and predictable?

Stage 2 — Add Visual Attention
Now ask the dancer to keep their eyes focused on a very specific target across the room.

Not staring aggressively.
Just clear visual orientation.

Many dancers immediately become more stable and organized from this alone.

Stage 3 — Add Breath Awareness
Now keep the same plié but add:

  • inhale lowering

  • exhale rising

Or simply:
“Can you keep breathing smoothly throughout the movement?”

Some dancers suddenly grip the ribs, neck, or jaw once attention divides.

Stage 4 — Add Head Movement
Perform the plié while slowly turning the head right and left.

Now the vestibular system becomes more involved.

You may see:

  • weight shifts

  • foot gripping

  • loss of balance

  • increased tension

  • changes in depth

This is useful information.

Stage 5 — Add Rhythm Changes
Now vary tempo:

  • slow down for 4 counts

  • rise quickly

  • pause at the bottom

  • change timing unexpectedly

The movement challenge has not changed much physically.

But processing demand has increased.

Stage 6 — Add Decision-Making
Teacher calls out:

  • “eyes right”

  • “arms second”

  • “rise”

  • “hold”

  • “faster”

  • “turn head left”

Now the dancer must adapt in real time instead of running a memorized motor program.

Stage 7 — Add Environmental Complexity
Other dancers move nearby.
Music changes.
Direction changes.
Spacing changes.

Now the brain must filter more information while maintaining movement organization.

This is much closer to actual performance conditions.

What becomes interesting is that dancers often discover:
they did not truly “own” the plié under complexity.

They only owned it under simplicity.

That is not a criticism.

It is simply how nervous systems work.

And this is why some dancers look very different:

  • at the barre

  • in center

  • across the floor

  • or on stage

The physical skill may not have disappeared.

The brain demand simply increased beyond the dancer’s current ability to stay organized.

That ability can absolutely be trained.
