A Nervous System Checklist Every Dancer Needs
As dancers and dance teachers, we are very good at looking at movement from the outside.
We notice the turnout.
The height of the leg.
The placement of the pelvis.
The line of the spine.
The wobble in relevé.
The tension in the shoulders.
And because we see those things, we often try to fix them directly.
More stretching.
More strengthening.
More corrections.
More effort.
But if I were going to help a dancer rebuild their body from the ground up, I would not begin with the shape of the movement.
I would begin with the information the brain is using to create that movement.
Because movement is not just muscular.
Movement is organized by the nervous system.
And if the brain does not feel clear, safe, or well-informed, the body often responds with stiffness, tension, hesitation, weakness, or poor coordination.
That does not mean something is “wrong” with the dancer.
It means the nervous system may need better input.
1. First: Can You Breathe Well?
Breathing may not sound like dance technique, but it is foundational.
We breathe thousands of times a day. So if our breathing pattern is limited, shallow, braced, or constantly driven by neck and shoulder tension, that pattern can influence posture, spinal mobility, endurance, balance, and even how much effort movement feels like it requires.
This is why I do not love the cue “belly breathing.”
It often turns into pushing the belly out and pulling it back in. That is not really the goal.
A more useful image is 360-degree breathing.
Try this:
Place your hands around your waist, almost like you are gently holding the sides of your lower ribs.
Breathe in and see if you can expand not just forward into the belly, but also sideways and slightly backward.
Think of the breath expanding like a cylinder.
Do three or four slow breaths.
Then reassess something simple: your spinal rotation, forward bend, shoulder mobility, or balance.
The question is not, “Did I do the breathing exercise perfectly?”
The better question is:
Did my body respond?
If your movement feels clearer, easier, or more available afterward, that is useful information.
2. Next: Can You See Well?
When I say “vision,” I do not just mean whether you have 20/20 eyesight.
For dancers, vision includes:
Can your eyes track smoothly?
Can they jump accurately from one point to another?
Can they converge as something comes toward you?
Can they diverge as something moves away?
Can you use your peripheral vision?
Can your eyes and head coordinate well together?
This matters because the visual system is one of the brain’s most important sources of information for orientation, posture, balance, and movement prediction.
A dancer who struggles with spotting may not simply have a “turning problem.”
They may have a visual timing problem.
Or a vestibular problem.
Or a neck proprioception problem.
Or a combination of all three.
A simple visual drill:
Hold one finger out in front of you.
Keep your eyes focused on the finger.
Slowly bring it toward your nose.
Then move it away again.
Repeat four or five times.
Keep it slow and comfortable.
Then reassess a movement: balance, rotation, plié, port de bras, or even walking.
Again, the goal is not to force the eyes. The goal is to see whether clearer visual input changes the body’s output.
3. Then: Can You Balance Well?
Balance is not just “standing on one leg.”
And it is definitely not just core strength.
Balance depends on the relationship between your visual system, vestibular system, proprioceptive system, feet, spine, breath, and nervous system state.
The vestibular system — your inner ear balance system — helps your brain know where your head is in space. This becomes especially important for dancers because dance constantly challenges orientation.
We turn.
We spot.
We change levels.
We move through space.
We balance on one leg.
We tilt, spiral, suspend, and recover.
If the brain does not trust where the head is in space, the body may become cautious.
That caution can show up as:
gripping
shallow breathing
reduced range of motion
fear of falling
tension in the neck or back
difficulty turning
reluctance to move the head freely
Try this very gently:
Stand near a wall or barre.
Stand on two feet first.
Pick a spot in front of you.
Slowly turn your head right and left while keeping your balance.
Then try looking slightly up and down.
Notice whether one direction feels more challenging.
Then reassess your balance, walking, or a simple dance movement.
For many dancers, head movement is not trained gradually enough. We ask the nervous system to manage turns and spotting before we have checked whether basic head movement feels safe and organized.
4. Then: Can Each Joint Move Clearly?
This is where joint mapping comes in.
Your brain has to know where your body parts are before it can control them well.
If a joint is poorly mapped — meaning the brain does not have clear information from that area — movement may become less efficient. The body may compensate somewhere else.
This is one reason I love small, specific joint circles and mobility work.
Not because they are fancy.
Not because they look impressive.
But because they give the brain clearer information.
For example, if the ankle is not well mapped, relevé may feel unstable.
If the hip is not well mapped, turnout may feel forced.
If the spine is not well mapped, port de bras may become stiff.
If the neck is not well mapped, spotting may become tense or unreliable.
This is also why “just stretch more” is often incomplete.
Sometimes the issue is not that the tissue needs more length.
Sometimes the brain needs more clarity.
5. Then: Can You Integrate It?
Dance is not isolated movement.
You do not just move an ankle.
You shift weight through the foot, organize the pelvis, coordinate the spine, use the eyes, respond to music, manage timing, and interact with space.
That means once a dancer improves a specific input — breath, eyes, balance, joint awareness — the next step is integration.
Can they use it while walking?
Can they use it in plié?
Can they use it in tendu?
Can they use it in relevé?
Can they use it while turning the head?
Can they use it while listening to music?
This is where movement becomes more like real dance again.
The nervous system needs both clarity and context.
6. Finally: Can You Add Complexity?
This is the part many dancers and teachers intuitively understand, even if we do not always name it.
Dance has cognitive load.
You are not only moving.
You are remembering choreography.
You are tracking rhythm.
You are responding to corrections.
You are managing spacing.
You are adjusting to other dancers.
You are coordinating arms, legs, head, eyes, and breath.
That is not just physical training.
That is brain training.
And as we age — or when we are tired, stressed, recovering from injury, or returning after time away — dual-tasking can become harder.
This is why we should build complexity gradually.
For example, take a simple plié.
First, feel your feet.
Then add breath.
Then add eye focus.
Then add head movement.
Then add arms.
Then change rhythm.
Then add a simple memory task or directional change.
The plié did not change.
The nervous system demand changed.
And that is a very different way to think about training.
The Bigger Picture
If I were helping a dancer rebuild their body from scratch, I would not start by asking:
“How flexible are you?”
“How strong are you?”
“How high can you lift your leg?”
“How many turns can you do?”
I would start with different questions:
Can you breathe in a way that supports movement?
Can your eyes give your brain clear information?
Does your inner ear trust head movement?
Do your feet and joints give reliable feedback?
Can your body organize movement without excessive guarding?
Can you gradually add complexity without losing coordination?
This does not replace technique.
It supports technique.
Because the goal is not to do more random drills.
The goal is to give the nervous system better information so the body can move with more trust, clarity, and ease.
That is where better movement begins.
